Prize wheel sizes: which one fits your space?
The size of each prize wheel (floor-standing, giant and tabletop) and how to work out the right one for your space, venue access and audience.
Choosing the size of a promotional prize wheel sounds easy: the bigger it is, the more it stands out. But a wheel that is too big for the stand gets in the way, and one that is too small for a busy exhibition hall goes unnoticed. There are also details nobody checks until set-up day, such as the venue's lifts or the maximum height allowed on the stand. In this article you will find the dimensions of each of our wheels and a simple method for choosing the right one for your space, access and audience.
The dimensions of each wheel
120 cm floor-standing wheel
- Overall size: around 120 × 190 × 60 cm (width × height × depth), including the stand.
- Graphic: around 110 cm in diameter.
- Stand: black, with wheels or with feet depending on the location.
- Access: fits in a standard lift. One person can spin it; it takes two to move it.
180 cm giant wheel
- Overall size: around 180 × 220 × 60 cm, with a metal base on the floor.
- Access: needs a goods lift or street-level access with no stairs or narrow corridors, as it is 220 cm long.
Tabletop and small wheels
- Tabletop wheels of around 38, 45 and 60 cm in diameter, to stand on a counter or table.
- Small floor-standing wheel on a tripod, around 60 cm (the one in our photos has 14 segments).
If you are buying, other diameters can also be made to order: we have made wheels of 80, 90 and 135 cm.
Step 1: measure the real space
A wheel takes up more room than its own dimensions. Around it you need space for three things: the person spinning, whoever is running the game, and the people watching or queuing. A practical way to work it out:
- The wheel's footprint: width by depth. Around 120 × 60 cm for the 120 cm wheel and around 180 × 60 cm for the 180 cm wheel.
- The play area: leave at least a metre clear in front of the wheel, so the player has room to swing their arm and nobody trips.
- The side: around 50 cm to one side for the person handing out prizes, plus a table or unit to keep them within reach.
- The queue: if you expect a crowd, mark where people should wait, so they do not block the aisle or the stand entrance.
On that basis, the 120 cm wheel needs a rectangle of roughly 1.7 × 1.6 m in practice, and the 180 cm wheel roughly 2.3 × 1.6 m. These are guide figures: with a well-organised stand you can squeeze in a little tighter.
Step 2: check height and access
- Maximum stand height. Many trade shows limit the height of elements around the edge of a stand. The 120 cm wheel is around 190 cm tall and the 180 cm wheel around 220 cm. Check the show rules and make sure it will not clash with banners, lights or hanging signs.
- The route to the spot. Ask the venue about lifts, goods lifts, steps and doors. The 120 cm wheel fits in a standard lift; the 180 cm wheel needs a goods lift or access with no stairs or narrow corridors.
- Set-up times. Set-up takes around 30 minutes once the wheel is on site, and we allow an hour. If the venue only allows very early set-up or very late take-down, let us know when you ask for a quote.
Step 3: think about reading distance
A wheel has to be seen from afar and read up close. From the aisle, people see colours and a logo; from two or three metres away, they can read the segments. The bigger the wheel, the larger the lettering can be and the more segments fit without looking cramped.
- In a large exhibition hall or shopping centre, where people walk past several metres away, size wins: the 180 cm wheel can be seen from a distance and draws attention on its own.
- On a medium-sized stand or in a shop, the 120 cm wheel strikes the balance between presence and space.
- On a counter, a reception desk or a cocktail table, people are less than a metre away: a tabletop wheel is enough.
Step 4: match the size to the audience
A stand with a hundred visitors a day is not the same as a fan zone with thousands of people. If you expect a crowd, the wheel does not just have to be visible: it has to allow a quick pace of spins. A spin with a prize handed over usually takes between half a minute and a minute, so an hour fits a few dozen at most. For very large crowds, consider two wheels rather than one bigger one, or two play points. We have supplied four 120 cm wheels for a single event.
Summary: which wheel for which space
- Stand of 9 to 16 m², shop, large reception, company dinner: 120 cm floor-standing wheel.
- Large stand, exhibition hall, shopping centre, outdoor event, fan zone: 180 cm giant wheel, if access allows.
- Counter, point of sale, reception, small stand or cocktail table: tabletop or small wheel.
Size also shapes the design
The size decides how many segments fit with legible lettering. On the 120 cm wheel, with a graphic of around 110 cm, 8 to 16 segments are comfortable to read. The 180 cm wheel fits more. On a tabletop wheel, keep to a few segments with one or two words each. For the design, we give you a template with the size and the centre marked, and the file is supplied as a full-size PDF.
